Congratulations to the members of the Cherokee Creek Boys School Cross Country Team. The boys ran the South Carolina Eye Opener this past weekend in Spartanburg, SC. The race was a 5K distance with the following participants: Jimmy, Loucas, Michael, Sam & Sam.

Check out a few video highlights below. If you look very closely at the beginning you will see Jimmy blur by in the middle of the pack.

Service Plus Trout

Jon hold up his frozen prize!

Teachers Nick Linscott and Betsy Riordan headed to the river yesterday with 10 students, several pairs of gloves, trash bags, buckets and fishing gear. For the second year, Cherokee Creek is sponsoring the Earls Ford access to the Chattooga River. Through a volunteer agreement with the Forest Service, our staff and students participate in regular campsite and area clean up in exchange for a little bit if covented time at the river.

After filling several buckets with trash and cleaning out numerous fire pits, yesterday’s crew settled down for a picnic lunch and some fishin’. As luck would have it, our most avid student fisherman, Jon (pictured) landed a beastly trout: 17.5 inches long and just under 3 pounds.

Talk about a win win!

The Bears Blowout

What a great weekend! Our innagural Bears Blowout Sports Banquet and Father Son Event was a hit with students, families and staff.

Friday evening we celebrated with a steak dinner complete wit live music! After dinner our athletes were honored individually by Coaches Kory Byrd and Yanic McDowell for their contributions to the soccer and basketball teams as they recived their trophies. The evening wrapped up with fun drills and games with the coaches running everyone through their paces!

Saturday’s rain moved us inside for basketball. Everyone modeled incredible flexibility and “open to outcome” positive attitudes as we implemented a rainy day “Plan B.”

Check out the pictures below and stay tuned for another chance for Father Son Football late this summer!

Bound for State

The team with their certificate verifying their 4th place finish and eligibility for State Championships

Alex and Alec review their robot run with a judge.

In a rocket-from-behind finish, the CCBS team competed in the regional First LEGO League on Saturday and placed 4th overall – qualifying them for the State Championships in North Charleston on March 5th!

This will be the 6th year in a row that the CCBS team has competed at State, a consistency that this team modeled with gusto. The team stayed tight on details, giving them the edge for the last qualifying spot. Best of all for a very proud Coach Nick Linscott was getting to watch Alec, Alex, Ben, Daniel, Dylan, Harrison, Jon and Wes have fun in a traditional school activity with students from all over the county – even dancing! Special thanks to the parents who were able to be present and cheer. By all accounts, it meant a great deal to have your support.

We hope you will join us in congratulating Nick and the boys for their outstanding achievment!

Students Raise $300 For Local Humane Society

Devon and Ethan man the table

One of our holiday season traditions here at Cherokee Creek Boys School is the Oconee Humane Society (OHS) fundraiser at Tractor Supply in Seneca, SC. This event was started by Weekend Manager William Carpenter, who routinely volunteers time at OHS.

Students sold hot dogs, chips, sodas and hot chocolate in addition to accepting donations of pet food and supplies. All donations, totalling about $300 were then deliverd to the OHS before returning to campus. Thanks to Treks Staff Paul Mathis and Royce Johnson for supervising this year’s event and thanks to Tractor Supply for, again, allowing students to set up camp right out front.

Other weekend activities included bowling, trips to the recreation fields for soccer and football scrimmages, the “Trotting ‘Round the Tree” horse show at Clemson University and the Nutcracker Ballet at the Clemson University Brooks Center. Students also “decked the halls” with a Christmas tree and placed lights and garland throughout the Lodge. Very festive!

    2010 Fall Deep Clean

Davis busts the dust with a shop-vac

We are looking a little spiffy these days thanks to the monumenal efforts of students, staff and our founders. This week, we took a break from the routine for a fall clean-up. Wednesday, Founder Ron Black and Jason Cooper got things started with outside cleaning projects. Yesterday, everyone rolled up their sleeves to tackle the Lodge and today things are wrapping up with the bunkhouse. This has not been out usual weekly house cleaning, but a super-duper deep clean.

Special thanks to Jason Cooper for donating his considerable expertise and to Kayla Tompkins for keeping it all organized.
