Turkey Day is Underway

Its that time of year again! Every year at Thanksgiving Cherokee Creek Boys School pit-roasts our turkeys for our Thanksgiving feast. It is an honor to be selected for Team Turkey. This year’s crew (pictured above) includes (from left): Sam, Cole, Teacher Nick Linscott, Jimmy, Operations Director Phil Fairbrother, Dain, Michael, and Barron. The team’s responsibilities include staying up until the wee hours tending the roasting coals.

William, Sandy, and Barbara look on as Phil prepares the Turkeys

But first, the turkeys are seasoned and wrapped in foil (several times).

Phil, Cole, Dain, and Barron scope out the pit

Then the boys clear the area of leaves and debris before digging a HUGE pit.

Next, the boys and staff will create a bonfire in the pit, which will be nursed through the night until there is a well established bed of coals. Then the turkeys will be placed on the coals and burried.

Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow…

Way to Go, Wes!!

With full hearts we celebrated Wes’ graduation today. It was a ceremony filled with tales of the boy he was and the young man he now is. Virtually everyone recognized Wes’ leadership and many made reference to his kindness and friendship. Most of all, there was an expressing of pride and recognition of how much he has grown.

Congratulations to you and your family, Wes!

Yeah, Jon!!

With full hearts, we celebrated Jon’s graduation today. Jon was honored for his leadership and “prevailing” ability to be kind and optimistic. Of course, there were good natured jokes from the boys about looking up to Jon both literaly and figuartively. But, mostly, students expressed gratitude for Jon’s friendship at the times of greatest need.

We will miss you, Jon, and are so proud of you!

The Bears Blowout

What a great weekend! Our innagural Bears Blowout Sports Banquet and Father Son Event was a hit with students, families and staff.

Friday evening we celebrated with a steak dinner complete wit live music! After dinner our athletes were honored individually by Coaches Kory Byrd and Yanic McDowell for their contributions to the soccer and basketball teams as they recived their trophies. The evening wrapped up with fun drills and games with the coaches running everyone through their paces!

Saturday’s rain moved us inside for basketball. Everyone modeled incredible flexibility and “open to outcome” positive attitudes as we implemented a rainy day “Plan B.”

Check out the pictures below and stay tuned for another chance for Father Son Football late this summer!

Bound for State

The team with their certificate verifying their 4th place finish and eligibility for State Championships

Alex and Alec review their robot run with a judge.

In a rocket-from-behind finish, the CCBS team competed in the regional First LEGO League on Saturday and placed 4th overall – qualifying them for the State Championships in North Charleston on March 5th!

This will be the 6th year in a row that the CCBS team has competed at State, a consistency that this team modeled with gusto. The team stayed tight on details, giving them the edge for the last qualifying spot. Best of all for a very proud Coach Nick Linscott was getting to watch Alec, Alex, Ben, Daniel, Dylan, Harrison, Jon and Wes have fun in a traditional school activity with students from all over the county – even dancing! Special thanks to the parents who were able to be present and cheer. By all accounts, it meant a great deal to have your support.

We hope you will join us in congratulating Nick and the boys for their outstanding achievment!

GO BEARS!
