    Welcome, Cole!

We heartily welcome Cole, a new White Oak who enrolled today!

Already, Cole is settling in and enjoying a not-as-frosty winter day out on the porch with the rest of the guys.

    Congratulations, Scott and Devon!!

Scott and Devon prepare to cross the bridge

With glad hearts we celebrated the graduation of Scott and Devon this past Friday.

Students and staff recognized both boys’ growth in truth, love, wisdom and courage – but especially Scott’s strength of heart and Devon’s perseverance. Both boys were also recognized for their friendship and mentorship to others.

We will miss both of these fine young men, their large hearts and leadership. Congratulations!! We look forward to hearing how your journey continues.

    Congratulations, Jaymen!!!

Jaymen, just after crossing the bridge at the end of his graduation

    We celebrated Jaymen’s graduation yesterday.

As we passed Jaymen’s “talking rock” there were many mentions of his kindness, big heart, friendship and hugs in addition to his growth in leadership and maturity over the last few months. Jaymen is a true “one of a kind” individual and he will be missed.

    Congratulations, Jaymen!

Students Raise $300 For Local Humane Society

Devon and Ethan man the table

One of our holiday season traditions here at Cherokee Creek Boys School is the Oconee Humane Society (OHS) fundraiser at Tractor Supply in Seneca, SC. This event was started by Weekend Manager William Carpenter, who routinely volunteers time at OHS.

Students sold hot dogs, chips, sodas and hot chocolate in addition to accepting donations of pet food and supplies. All donations, totalling about $300 were then deliverd to the OHS before returning to campus. Thanks to Treks Staff Paul Mathis and Royce Johnson for supervising this year’s event and thanks to Tractor Supply for, again, allowing students to set up camp right out front.

Other weekend activities included bowling, trips to the recreation fields for soccer and football scrimmages, the “Trotting ‘Round the Tree” horse show at Clemson University and the Nutcracker Ballet at the Clemson University Brooks Center. Students also “decked the halls” with a Christmas tree and placed lights and garland throughout the Lodge. Very festive!

    If The Shoe Fits…

Dylan gets fitted for basketball shoes

Earlier this week, boys interested in playing on this year’s basketball team had a new and different shoe shopping experience – the store came to them! Coaches Kory Byrd and Yanic McDowell invited a local sports retailer to come out to campus for fittings. As a result, each student had the opportunity to try a couple of different styles and work with a specialist to ensure a good fit.

We are anxious to see this year’s game schedule and will post it as soon as we get it!

    2010 Fall Deep Clean

Davis busts the dust with a shop-vac

We are looking a little spiffy these days thanks to the monumenal efforts of students, staff and our founders. This week, we took a break from the routine for a fall clean-up. Wednesday, Founder Ron Black and Jason Cooper got things started with outside cleaning projects. Yesterday, everyone rolled up their sleeves to tackle the Lodge and today things are wrapping up with the bunkhouse. This has not been out usual weekly house cleaning, but a super-duper deep clean.

Special thanks to Jason Cooper for donating his considerable expertise and to Kayla Tompkins for keeping it all organized.

    Hanukkah Celebrations Begin

Happy Hanukkah! Eight students (pictured right) began the celebration yesterday with David LePere by sharing a lunchtime presentation of customs, traditions and history related to the 8-day Festival of Lights. This was followed in the evening with the lighting of the school’s Hanukkah menorah after dinner.

Barbara Meyer, our cook, also served latkes (potato pancakes) at lunch. Many thanks to families who contributed candles, dreidels and gelt for everyone to enjoy!
