The Bears Blowout

What a great weekend! Our innagural Bears Blowout Sports Banquet and Father Son Event was a hit with students, families and staff.

Friday evening we celebrated with a steak dinner complete wit live music! After dinner our athletes were honored individually by Coaches Kory Byrd and Yanic McDowell for their contributions to the soccer and basketball teams as they recived their trophies. The evening wrapped up with fun drills and games with the coaches running everyone through their paces!

Saturday’s rain moved us inside for basketball. Everyone modeled incredible flexibility and “open to outcome” positive attitudes as we implemented a rainy day “Plan B.”

Check out the pictures below and stay tuned for another chance for Father Son Football late this summer!

Team RoboBears in Charleston

Team RoboBears (pictured above from left: Alec, Daniel, Dylan, Harrison, Alex, Wes, Jon and Ben) and Coach Nick Linscott represented themselves and Cherokee Creek very well this past Saturday at the LEGO League State Championships in Charleston, SC. Parents of team members came from all over the country to cheer on the Bears as they competed with 79 other teams in this year’s Body Forward Challenge.

This was a great experience all around. Students and staff were even able to fit in a trip to the beach!

Check out the video below of their first robot run early in the day. Alex and Harrison had a great run!

2010 Fall Deep Clean

Davis busts the dust with a shop-vac

We are looking a little spiffy these days thanks to the monumenal efforts of students, staff and our founders. This week, we took a break from the routine for a fall clean-up. Wednesday, Founder Ron Black and Jason Cooper got things started with outside cleaning projects. Yesterday, everyone rolled up their sleeves to tackle the Lodge and today things are wrapping up with the bunkhouse. This has not been out usual weekly house cleaning, but a super-duper deep clean.

Special thanks to Jason Cooper for donating his considerable expertise and to Kayla Tompkins for keeping it all organized.

2010 Turkey Team

The 2010 Turkey Team: (from left) Adrian, Calvin, Jon, Ben, Drew, Daniel and Teacher Nick Linscott

Announcing this year’s Turkey Team: Adrian, Calvin, Jon, Ben, Drew and Daniel. These boys will work with staff members Phil Fairbrother and Nick Linscott to pit roast 5 turkeys for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving Day feast. It is an honor to be selected for this responsibility – and a lot of hard work. Check out their itinerary below:

  • Wednesday afternoon the team will work with Academic Lead Nick Linscott to prepare the area for fire safety. They will then dig a large pit and lay a fire ready to be started in the middle of the night.
  • In the wee hours of the night (around 12:00 AM Thanksgiving morning) Operations Director Phil Fairbrother will come in and wake the team. Together they will start the fire and fuel it with a lot of wood for the next 4 hours.
  • At 5:00 AM the foil-wrapped turkeys will be placed in the pit of coals and covered with dirt where they will roast for 5-6 hours.
  • Tomorrow morning Nick and the boys will gently unearth the birds and take them to the kitchen where they will perform their final task of preparing the meat for serving.

Stay tuned for more Turkey Team details and some photos from their all-night experience.
